PROMPERU, an agency charged with promoting Peruvian exports in France, launched a design contest concentrating on alpaca wool in honor of the Bicentenary of Peruvian Independance and to highlight the brand Alpaca del Perù. This presented a unique opportunity for our young designers to discover this fiber with numerous qualities (soft, thermo-regular, elastic…), the pride of the Peruvian textile industry. The hope being that this would not only promote, but reinvigorate alpaca wool’s image via the vision of our young designers and their modern, original ideas.
Nearly 75kg of alpaca fiber, supplied by Peruvian spinners Incatops, Itessa and Michell, were distributed to the 21 students selected from ESMOD France (Bordeaux, Lyon, Paris, Rennes & Roubaix, all years combined) for their designs. Over the course of 4 months, they worked, alone or in groups, on pieces that allowed them to learn knitting techniques either by hand or machine.
A panel of judges met on Tuesday, June 8, before which our Esmodians presented their concepts and final products. The jury was composed of :
Cinthya Guerrero, Founder of the brand Stella Pardo
